The Impact of Financial Technology (Fintech) on Acceleration of Islamic Financial Services Delivery: A Case Study of Islamic Banks in Nigeria
Abstract
Financial technology (FinTech) is revolutionizing global financial services, offering a potent solution to the persistent challenge of financial exclusion, particularly in Nigeria where a 36% shortfall from national targets remains. For Islamic banks, FinTech presents a strategic avenue to accelerate service delivery and cater to a growing demand for Sharia-compliant products. However, empirical evidence on its specific impact within the Nigerian Islamic finance context is scarce. This study therefore investigates the influence of FinTech on accelerating Islamic financial services delivery. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to 384 staff and customers of Jaiz and Taj Banks. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that specific FinTech channels namely USSD codes, ATMs, electronic banking, and online customer service chatbots have a statistically significant positive impact on service acceleration. In contrast, mobile wallet applications and point-of-sale (POS) systems showed no significant effect. The study concludes that a targeted approach, focusing on high-impact digital channels like USSD and AI-driven customer service, is crucial for Islamic banks in Nigeria to enhance operational efficiency, expand accessibility, and effectively bridge the financial inclusion gap. These results provide critical insights for bank executives and policymakers to strategically prioritize FinTech investments and regulatory frameworks.
