Abstract

This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven cultural contextualization on intermediate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ understanding of idiomatic expressions. Although idiomatic expressions are essential for fluency in English, their deep-rooted ethno-cultural connotations often hinder comprehension for non-native speakers. This research explores whether AI tools that provide cultural context can effectively bridge this comprehension gap or potentially lead to further confusion. Employing a mixed-methods approach—including pre- and post-tests, learner surveys, and interviews—the study assesses how AI-powered tools influence learners’ understanding of idioms and their cultural awareness. The findings offer practical implications for the integration of AI in EFL instruction and suggest strategies for enhancing idiomatic language teaching through culturally-informed digital tools.
